Study Tips Series 1: How to tackle your upcoming exams!

Tip #1: Have a positive mindset

Have confidence in yourself and avoid negative self talk. Tell yourself that if your peers can do it, you can do it too! Concentrate on solving problems and answering test questions instead of thinking of the negative consequences of failing your exams.

Should you need help in motivating yourself, speak to a counselor in school or your form teachers. Always remember that you are not alone!

Tip #2: Learn to manage exam stress

Exams should be treated as a gauge of how well you cope with the subjects that were taught in school. Many Singaporean students usually manage exam stress well and tend to make simple errors, resulting in the loss of marks.

This is especially so when they take the national exams and they often experience greater stress due to the fact that their results will determine whether or not they will be able to get into their desired course or university. Thus, it is of paramount importance that you prepare yourself both mentally and physically so that you will perform your best during exams.

Tip #3: Be well prepared

Try to adopt a good study habit from today onwards if you do not have one yet. Many students tend to do ‘last minute cramming’ and were not able to score well for their exams. These students may want to consider setting realistic goals with sufficient time for a quality revision. All students should try to start their revision early and adhere strictly to a revision schedule so as to spread out the workload evenly.

Tip #4: Learn to relax before the exams

It is very important for you to feel relaxed and comfortable before exams. You should check your exam venue way beforehand and arrive at least 30 minutes earlier at the exam venue to avoid panic. Before leaving your house, do a quick mental check to make sure that you have brought all the necessary items (eg. Entry proof, NRIC, French curve, writing materials etc).

You are more likely to feel more confident and prepared this way and this might give you an extra edge over your classmates who are always rushing into the exam hall at the last minute!
